House Prices vs Income by Location (2021)

Line

Buying a house doesn’t come cheap. Homes located in the UK are becoming more expensive, making it even harder to get yourself on the property ladder. A common metric of affordability of housing is the house price to income ratio. Essentially, what multiple of your income does it take to afford the house. For the purpose of this article, we have focused on regions within the UK, looking at the median salaries for full-time workers VS the average house price for the region in 2021.

The Rankings:

The table below shows the regions ranked from most affordable to least affordable housing, based on their house price to income ratio in December 2021. The table clearly shows the divide between the northern and southern regions. According to the metric, the North East proved to have the most affordable housing, with house prices sitting at just over five times the average median salary. It will come as no surprise that London was the least affordable, with by far the highest average house prices, it takes almost 14 times the median salary to afford the average house price in the capital.
